The plan for encoding Sutton Signwriting in Unicode is for there to be two separate Unicode proposals. The first is for the symbol set covered by ISWA 2010. The second is for an encoding that takes symbols and turns them into signs.
Symbol Encoding:
The Sutton SignWriting symbol set based on ISWA 2010 has been accepted for encoding into a future
version of the Unicode Standard. The script is in the
Pipeline at
U+1D800..U+1DAAF.
A number of proposals for its inclusion have been submitted to the Unicode Technical Committee and WG2:
2011-04-06
Preliminary proposal for
encoding the SignWriting script in the SMP of the UCS — Michael Everson (WG2=n4015,
L2/11-101)
2011-08-05
Revised proposal for
encoding the SignWriting script in the SMP of the UCS — Michael Everson, Stephen Slevinski, and
Valerie Sutton (WG2=n4090R, L2/11-217R)
2012-10-14
Proposal for encoding Sutton
SignWriting in the UCS — Michael Everson, Martin Hosken, Stephen Slevinski, and Valerie Sutton
(WG2=n4342, L2/12-321)
Layout Encoding:
The document below contains some initial thinking on how Sign layout might be encoded. There is no intention to standardise on such an encoding without first producing at least one test implementation, but discussion needs to start somewhere and head in some concrete direction.
