Thank you for your interest in adding to ScriptSource! We have tried to make the process for adding information to the site as simple as possible. This tutorial demonstrates how to add a link to another web site.

You may have reached this page from the How to contribute information tutorial, which instructs you as to how to find the correct form to submit something to the site. If not, the form is easy to locate:

  • Use the search bar or the browsing tools at the top of every page to navigate to the script, character, or language to which your submission pertains.
  • Select the appropriate subject area from the options displayed on every script, character, and language page.
  • Click the 'Add to ScriptSource' button on the left of the page; this will take you to a list of submission types (text, image, reference etc.).
  • Select 'Link to a webpage or software package' and then choose the type of link you would like to add from the dropdown menu.

This will take you to the correct form to submit a link. The forms are slightly different depending on whether you would like to submit a link to a software package hosted on another site, or a link to a webpage containing information about a script, language, or character. We have provided guide text below each field to help you fill the form out. Note that fields marked with an asterisk are required, and if they are left blank the system will not allow you to submit the form.

How to link to a web page on another site

Please note that web links submitted using this form will be published in the 'Sources & References' subject area of the page you associate them with.

First provide the title of the web page in the 'Title' field.

Then enter a description of the page in the 'Description' field. This should briefly describe what the web page is about and evaluate the helpfulness and quality of the content in fewer than 150 words. If you know the name of the author, note it in the 'Author' field.

Copy and paste the URL for the web page into the 'URL' field on the form. Enter some 'Link text' so that the link will display as a short phrase rather than as a URL.

Your submission then needs to be associated with the pages on which you wish it to appear. See 'How to associate your entry', below.

To add a link to a software package hosted on another site

First think of a short title to identify the entry (this would typically be the name of the software itself, to help people searching for particular software to find it) and enter it in the 'Title' field. Then select the type of software (Font, Keyboard, Encoding converter, Sort specification, or Other) from the dropdown in the 'Type' field.

Then copy and paste the URL for the webpage where the software is hosted into the 'URL' field on the form. Enter some 'Link text' so that the link will display as a short phrase rather than as a URL.

Enter a description of the software in the 'Description' field. Please use markup to format the text in this field. If you wish to include an image, for example to illustrate a font, click the 'Browse' button to select a .jpg or .png file from your computer.

We do not normally host software on the ScriptSource site, but if you own the rights to distribute a particular software package and wish to use the site for that purpose, you may upload the software package from your computer using the 'File' field. See How to add documents or files

Copyright and license information must be provided for all software on the site. Please fill in the 'Copyright' field using the format © yyyy name. Note that (c) will not format correctly on the site; you will need to copy and paste the copyright symbol from the guide text below the text box. Then select a license from the dropdown in the 'License' field. This must reflect the license already applied to the software and included in the package or archive. We encourage the use of open software licenses; if you own the copyright to the software package, please consider selecting an appropriate open license such as the SIL Open Font License.

The 'Contributor' field will have been automatically filled in with your name. Check that this is correct.

Your submission then needs to be associated with the pages on which you wish it to appear.

How to Associate your entry

Software entries on the site need to be associated with one subject area within at least one script, character or language page. Other links to web pages do not need a subject; they will automatically be displayed in the 'Sources & References' subject tab. Associations are made using the three panels ('Associated Scripts', 'Associated Languages' and 'Associated Characters') at the bottom of the form. Associations can be added or deleted using the + and - buttons below each panel.

For further instructions please see Associations Help.

When you have finished, review your entry, then click the 'Save and Preview' or the 'Save and Submit for Approval' button at the bottom of the form. Both of these will give you the option to preview your submission and then submit it for moderation. (The 'Save and Continue Editing' button can be used at any time during the process to save what you have done so far without submitting it to the site moderators.) For details of the moderation and approval process, please see the Editorial Policy.

Your entry will not be visible on the site until it has been approved. You will be notified by email when it has been approved, or, if it is rejected or requires revision, you will be notified in the same way. We look forward to receiving your submission!
