Sponsorship & Funding

The current version of this policy is 1.1. Any revisions will be announced and published here.

Version 1.1 (12 October 2011) added a link to Partnership information, encouraged people to add needs and clarified the influence of funding sources on content.

ScriptSource is a service operated by SIL International to serve language communities worldwide. Our postal contact address is ScriptSource, SIL Non-Roman Script Initiative, 7500 West Camp Wisdom Road, Dallas, TX 75236, USA. This Funding and Partnership policy applies only to the online service, and not to other services of SIL International.

ScriptSource is currently managed and hosted by  SIL International, which provides funds, computing personnel and linguistic expertise to the project. The long-term vision, however, is that ScriptSource will become a service operated and managed by a broad consortium from the academic, professional, design, computing and linguistic communities.

SIL's intent is to establish a basic technical, policy and content foundation, including:

  • Core database designed for information on scripts, characters and languages
  • Baseline of data on every script to serve as a catalyst for community contributions Subject-based interface for navigating and organising script information
  • Open and friendly licensing policies and recommendations for contributors

Even though it may be a while before a long-term ScriptSource Consortium is established, there are opportunities for companies and organizations to become involved. Your participation is warmly welcomed. Here are some of the ways you can help make ScriptSource a success:

  • Author content on specific scripts and languages, especially images of the scripts in use and texts for use in testing. See our Contributor Guidelines.
  • Submit links to useful web sites, books and other sources.
  • Post needs for writing system software development.
  • Help us keep the quality of information on ScriptSource excellent by making suggestions and informing us of errors.
  • Link to ScriptSource from your web site and recommend it to your colleagues.
  • Suggest ScriptSource to funding agencies and grant providers as a worthy investment.

If you are an organization or company and would like to help sponsor and support ScriptSource in more formal ways, please read our page on Partnerships.

ScriptSource is not a commercial venture. The funds necessary to run the ScriptSource service and its supporting community and team currently come from a not-for-profit organization, SIL International, and its contributors. ScriptSource itself does not sell products or services.

If you would like to financially contribute to ScriptSource, you can use this  donation page. We are also looking for long-term financial support from companies, organizations and institutions.

Funding sources will not influence the content of ScriptSource on the editorial level, but may influence the development of particular features of the site. The project also does not endorse any particular activities, methodologies or viewpoints of funding partners and remains independent in terms of editorial policy and affiliation. See our Editorial Policy.

ScriptSource does not accept advertising. Proprietary products may be listed among software options, but appear without any endorsement, and not as a result of payment of any kind.
