    This chapter is part of the catalogue that accompanied the 2007 exhibition, Inscribing Meaning, at the Smithsonian Institute, which explored the relationships between African art, graphic systems and the written word. This chapter discusses graphic symbolism in Africa, and provides a historical overview of the spread of written communication in the context of African religion, art and major historical events in the region. A number of indigenous African writing systems are discussed in some detail.
